I lead a multidisciplinary research program focused on assessing the ecological condition and health of the San Diego River watershed. By integrating molecular techniques, biological indicators, and physicochemical monitoring, we generate robust data to analyze biodiversity, detect species of interest, and evaluate anthropogenic impacts on riverine ecosystems.<\/p>\n

Environmental DNA (eDNA) Analysis<\/strong>
Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis is a non-invasive and highly sensitive method for detecting and monitoring aquatic species. Organisms shed genetic material\u2014via epithelial cells, mucus, feces, and other biological residues\u2014that become suspended in the water column. By filtering water samples and extracting DNA, we perform taxonomic identification using quantitative PCR or high-throughput sequencing (metabarcoding).<\/p>\n

We implement this approach in remote river systems in collaboration with the California State Water Resources Control Board and the local San Diego Fly Fishers community. Our target native species of priority include Taricha torosa<\/em>, Oncorhynchus mykiss<\/em>, Anaxyrus californicus<\/em>, and Actinemys marmorata<\/em>, among others. We also monitor invasive species such as Procambarus clarkii<\/em>, Lepomis cyanellus<\/em>, and Lithobates catesbeianus.<\/em><\/p>\n

Bioassessments: Evaluating Biological Integrity<\/strong>
I conduct structured bioassessments to analyze the composition and structure of biological communities as direct indicators of stream ecological health. These assessments evaluate diversity, abundance, and taxonomic composition of benthic macroinvertebrates, periphytic algae, fish fauna, and riparian vegetation following standardized protocols established by the State Water Board.<\/p>\n

The results contribute to the California Stream Condition Index (CSCI), providing a quantitative and robust measure of biological integrity that informs adaptive management and decision-making in conservation and restoration efforts.<\/p>\n

Water Quality Monitoring: Longitudinal Data for Environmental Management<\/strong>
With over 20 years of data, I coordinate a monthly physicochemical water quality monitoring program across multiple fixed sites along the lower San Diego River. Key parameters measured include pH, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, turbidity, and nutrient concentrations (nitrates and phosphates), adhering to standardized sampling and chemical analysis protocols.<\/p>\n

This dataset enables identification of temporal trends, detection of point and non-point pollution sources, and evaluation of mitigation and restoration effectiveness. I complement this program with specialized studies, including microbiological monitoring and long-term hydrological research in partnership with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, to better deeper understanding of hydrological dynamics and their ecological implications for the river system.<\/p>\n
