Have you ever walked along the San Diego River and wondered about its role in our community? How do we keep this vital space clean, healthy, and thriving for wildlife and future generations? As a biologist and someone who loves connecting with nature, these questions inspire me.<\/p>\n

The San Diego River is more than a waterway\u2014it\u2019s a living, breathing part of our city. It\u2019s home to incredible wildlife, a peaceful place for families to explore, and a reminder of why we must protect our environment. But this natural treasure faces challenges. Pollution, trash, and social issues like homelessness affect the river\u2019s health. That\u2019s why I joined efforts to make a difference with The San Diego River Park Foundation.<\/p>\n

One of the most impactful programs I\u2019ve worked with is the River Assessment Field Team (RAFT). Twice a week, we head out to map trash along the riverbed. It\u2019s a detailed process\u2014we record the type and location of debris to create a big-picture view of pollution. This data helps us identify where the river needs the most care and allows us to track progress over time. By collaborating with local agencies and using advanced tools, we\u2019re not just cleaning up but finding long-term solutions.<\/p>\n

But gathering data is only the start. Through the River Rescue Program, volunteers take direct action. We meet twice a week to remove trash from the riverbed, preventing it from reaching the ocean and threatening wildlife. Since the program began in 2009, nearly 2 million pounds of trash have been removed from the riverbed. This year, I celebrated with the team as we reached an incredible milestone: our 1,000th River Rescue event!<\/p>\n
